1.Matthew Supersad
Matt studied French and Spanish at Manchester University, realizing early on in his degree that his love of languages had come to influence his love of cinema (in particular the output of France and Spain, of course!). His studies taught him to observe film with an academic eye, so it was during those heady student years that he absorbed the fundamentals of film theory. From an editorial angle, Matt also had a couple of film-related articles published in student magazines.
Working as Dailies Editor for the 2005 Commonwealth Film Festival in Manchester broadened Matt’s experience of cinema from a hands-on, organizational perspective within the industry itself. His responsibilities included interviewing film-makers and producing and compiling other content for the Dailies, as well as contributing copy to the festival programme. In the same year he also wrote notes to accompany several films showing at the Cornerhouse’s Viva Spanish Film Festival.
Eager to exploit his knowledge of film theory for practical ends after graduating from university, Matt moved to London to study digital film-making at the SAE Institute. Looking to feed his tastes for writing, directing, and editing, he now has something to show for his efforts.
His proudest achievement is a short documentary that he wrote, directed, and co-edited about that oft-overlooked talent of British cinema, the film-maker Ken Russell. Watch On Ken Russell at Ken Russell’s official website!
However, Matt has sustained his passion for writing about film by writing reviews and features for the online magazine FilmExposed.com, his academic eye having been refocused for a more populist – albeit cineliterate – demographic.
Matt also occupies himself with filming and editing concerts for MashedUK, an organiser and promoter of live events, and for the Singology Gospel Choir; needless to say, he’s always on the lookout for other film-related things to get his teeth into, though!
